ABOUT

Bobbe Garcia

I was born and raised in Fayetteville, NC. I got my Bachelors in Art Education with a concentration in Printmaking in the spring of 2017 from Fayetteville State University. Afterwards, I taught in public schools for 6 years but recently stepped out of the classroom to focus on my children and pursue being an artist full time. My future goal is to get my Masters in Fine Arts and go back to teaching. The art classroom was so vital for me growing up, and I aim to create that same safe and welcoming space.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work embodies a transformation between an old self and a new self. Transformation and growth are typical of the human experience, my early years were anything but typical. My growth was stifled by harsh and oppressive abuse, and my transformation has been a violent break from my rotted roots. I explore the contrast between a groomed and abused child, to a survivor, a woman, and a mother. Using femininity as the foundation that I build my work upon. I seek answers for my experiences as well as validation for my intuition and the expression of those experiences. I fight against what I was conditioned to feel, which was to hate and distrust myself. The process of learning to love myself has informed my creative process. Through channeling my intuition and self-reflection I find inspiration digging beneath layers of self-doubt, trauma, and calcified feelings. This translates to the creation of layers within my work, as I deconstruct my past and flourish into my true self. Growing up in a rural area, I have always been surrounded by nature. Using limited color palettes, layers, and organic shapes from foliage and flowers, I aim to create an image that represents my explorative journey of transformation. Each color I choose is representative of my physical appearance and then arranged according to the focus of specific parts of myself. Organic shapes from foliage portray the physical and spiritual characteristics of the human body. I am mindful, meditative and possessed by an ethereal feeling when I am creating. It allows my body to move automatically and authentically, driven by intuition. My process depends on leaning into that flow, as I make visual connections to colors, shapes, and lines that intuitively connect. Which roots into trusting myself and heals my soul.
